INFORMATION ON LABOR AND BIRTH AVAILABLE ON SMARTPHONE APPLICATIONS

Objective: To know the diverse information about labor and birth available in smartphone apps for pregnant women/couples; and to analyze the content of the information about labor and birth conveyed in the apps surveyed. Methods: An exploratory and qualitative study, with thematic analysis, based on Bardin. Data collection took place between September and December 2022. Results: Five apps were selected and three broad analysis categories were generated from their contents, namely: 1) Normal or C-section births; 2) Practices and attitudes to experience labor and birth in a positive way: and 3) Labor and birth care centered on the figure of physicians and holding power over the decisions related to the body of the pregnant and birthing women. Discussion: There are inconsistencies in relation to the diverse scientific evidence in part of the information available, such as: delivery assistance centered on the figure of physicians; incorrect indications for C-sections; and verticalized and authoritarian relationships between professionals and pregnant and birthing women. Some contents that may contribute to a positive delivery experience were verified: delivery planning; choice of a companion; adoption of non-pharmacological strategies for pain relief; and promotion of “The Golden Hour”. Final Considerations: The analysis of the information conveyed in the apps can contribute to (re)thinking contents and integrate new ones to the sections analyzed, as well as to evidencing the content creators' responsibility in the current digital era. It is fundamental to promote safe information based on science and not to advocate in favor of wrong myths and beliefs.
