Resumo: | OBJECTIVE: To analyze the profile of women undergoing abortion, as well as variables related to this event. METHOD: This is an extension of a large cross-sectional study with prospective data survey and was implemented in health facilities in 30 countries of the world health organization regions in Africa and Latin America. In this study we focused on data collected in a public maternity hospital in eastern Maranhão. The study population were women with signs and symptoms of abortion who sought care in the unit. The information was collected from the medical records in the referred maternity, using a form. The data were analyzed based on absolute and percentage frequencies. The study was submitted and approved by the Ethics and Research Committee of the State University of Campinas under opinion No. 2.658.522. RESULTS: Most women studied were between 20 and 29 years old; were married; had one source of income; had between 1 and 10 years of schooling; were multiparous, with no history of abortions and were in their first trimester of pregnancy. Abortions were mostly classified as incomplete, the most performed procedure was curettage, and most did not have serious maternal complications with potentially life-threatening conditions. CONCLUSION: Abortion is a public health problem and the use of these data becomes indispensable to provide data to improve public health policies in the region, especially those focused on sexual and reproductive rights. |
