Resumo: Objective: to evaluate the knowledge of mothers and family members related to care provided to newborns. Method: a descriptive, quantitative study, carried out with mothers and relatives of newborns who were attended and / or followed up at two Health Centers and a Primary Health Care Unit located in the interior of Ceará, and two maternity hospitals, one of which interior of Ceará and another in Fortaleza. Data collection occurred with 196 mothers and family members from August to December 2019, through individual interviews using an electronic form. The study was submitted to and approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Maternidade Escola Assis Chateaubriand through Plataforma Brasil. Results: the results pointed out gaps in some knowledge of the participants regarding the care given to the baby, namely: exclusive breastfeeding practices, general hygiene care, colic management, sleep, immunization and sunbathing for the newborn. Conclusion: there was a need for interventions that work with the knowledge of caregivers, in order to contribute to the better quality of life and health of newborns, and to reduce neonatal morbidity and mortality rate. Método: estudo descritivo, quantitativo, realizado com mães e familiares de recém-nascidos que eram atendidos e/ou acompanhados em dois Centros de Saúde e em uma Unidade de Atenção Primária à Saúde localizados no interior do Ceará, e duas maternidades, sendo uma do interior do Ceará e outra de Fortaleza. A coleta de dados ocorreu com 196 mães e familiares de agosto a dezembro de 2019, por meio de entrevistas individuais utilizando um formulário eletrônico. O estudo foi submetido e aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa da Maternidade Escola Assis Chateaubriand por meio da Plataforma Brasil. Resultados: os resultados apontaram lacunas em alguns conhecimentos dos participantes quanto aos cuidados dispensados ao bebê, a saber: práticas de aleitamento materno exclusivo, cuidados de higiene geral, manejo das cólicas, sono, imunização e banho de sol do recém-nascido.
