Occupational accidents with biological material among the nursing team of a university hospital of Minas Gerais

Resumo: Objective: to analyze occupational accidents with biological material among nursing professionals at a university hospital in Minas Gerais. Methods: it is a descriptive, exploratory, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach. It was carried out in a university hospital in a city in the north of Minas Gerais whose sample was composed of 168 professionals from the nursing team. A semi-structured interview was used as a data collection instrument. The data were discussed using a bivariate analysis. Results: A total of 163 nursing team professionals, 21 nurses and 147 nursing technicians participated in the study. The predominant age groups were professionals older than 40 years (52.4%). Most were nursing technicians and female professionals. 67.4% of accidents were through sharps, 48.2% of professionals denied having received training/qualifications on prevention of accidents with biological material during the profession, 95.2% consider the skills to prevent occupational exposure important. Conclusion: Health professionals should adopt appropriate biosecurity measures to perform their daily activities and, consequently, prevent the occurrence of accidents. The adoption of these measures can reduce risks and create a safer work environment in order to directly interfere with workers' physical, mental and social well-being.

Métodos: trata-se de um estudo descritivo, exploratório, transversal, com abordagem quantitativa. Foi realizado em um hospital universitário de uma cidade do norte de Minas Gerais cuja amostra foi composta por 168 profissionais da equipe de enfermagem. Foi utilizada uma entrevista semiestruturada como instrumento de coleta de dados. Os dados foram discutidos por meio de análise bivariada. Resultados: predomínio de técnicos de enfermagem (87,5%), sexo feminino (67,3%), com idade superior a 40 anos (52,4%). Houve prevalência de acidentes com materiais perfurocortantes (67,4%), sendo que 48,2% dos profissionais negaram ter recebido treinamento/capacitações sobre a prevenção de acidentes com material biológico durante o exercício de sua profissão. Ainda, 95,2% consideram importantes as capacitações de modo a evitar exposições ocupacionais. Conclusão: os profissionais da saúde devem adotar medidas de biossegurança apropriadas para a realização de suas atividades diárias e, conseqüentemente, prevenir a ocorrência dos acidentes.
