Religious tourism in the Rio Grande do Norte: the multiple faces of the “meetings” in Seridó region

Resumo: The article aims to analyze the transformation process of a sacred place, initially set by religious reasons, to a “religious touristic” destination supported by an organizational infra-structure, and its implications on a new meaning of sacred place. Its searches to understand the destinations of religious tourism in Rio Grande do Norte State and implications from such activity related to municipalities touristic potential as a marketing product; focusing the traditional religious fests as a favorable moment, where the gathering of tourists and local communities takes place. For research development, in loco observations were carried out, as well as semi-structured interviews with tourists, pilgrims, local residents and event organizers.

O artigo tem como propósito analisar o processo de transformação de um lugar sagrado, a princípio determinado por motivos religiosos, em um destino “turístico-religioso” que se apóia sobre uma infra-estrutura organizacional, e suas implicações na re-significação do sagrado. Busca-se compreender os destinos do turismo religioso no Rio Grande do Norte e as implicações dessa atividade relacionada ao potencial turístico dos municípios, como um produto mercadológico, focalizando as tradicionais festas religiosas como um momento propício, quando se dá o encontro de turistas e comunidades locais. Para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa, foram feitas observações in loco, entrevistas semi-estruturadas com turistas, peregrinos, moradores locais e organizadores dos eventos.
