Resumo: Sexual diversity is a common, visible fact in higher education, nevertheless these identity expressions often face prejudices, as well as the reproduction of hegemonic conceptions. The goal of this research project was to identify the perceptions of homosexual youths and adults on their social insertion in the academic environment of a higher education institution, located in Bras??lia, Brazil???s capital city. This project was developed as a case study by means of an exploratory and descriptive qualitative research. Although the national literature has abundant studies on sexual diversity in basic schools, the opposite happens to higher education. Besides institutional documents analysis, we developed semi-structured interviews with five students self-identified as lesbians and five self-identified as gays. They were selected by means of snowballing sample, in a list of five persons, from which one was randomly chosen. We conducted data interpretation by means of text content analysis. Results show that entry to adult life coincides for average and higher socioeconomic status population with higher education admission. Contrary to a history of painful experiences in basic education, when they were children and particularly adolescents, higher education has offered to them a favourable environment to sexual diversity expressions, except in rare episodes of peers??? verbal aggressions and of some faculty indifference or manifestations in courses against diversity. All the interviewed self-designated as lesbian women stated they had never experienced any kind of rejection. On the contrary, men self-identified as gays revealed numerous episodes of discrimination by male peers. However, they all had never found obstacles to their academic development and results. The participants converged to the position that their daily experience in that institution had been friendly in relation to sexual diversity. Moreover, they found freedom of communication, participating freely in study groups. The participants recommended actions by the institution focused in favour of human rights education, specifically concerned to multiple sexual expressions, such as lectures, seminars, and discussions.

dc.description.abstract.eng.fl_txt_mv Sexual diversity is a common, visible fact in higher education, nevertheless these identity expressions often face prejudices, as well as the reproduction of hegemonic conceptions.
