From utopia to reality: portrait of cooperativism in Brazil – a study between the years of 2010 and 2018

Resumo: This article aims to present a portrait of cooperativism in Brazil, from the years of 2010 to 2018. Starting from a historical perspective, we describe the different branches of cooperativism and then analyze the context of the Brazilian cooperative movement, taking into account some of the main characteristics that make it possible to draw a profile of the movement, such as: number of cooperatives, number of cooperative members and total jobs generated. The data were segmented by line of business, according to the classification proposed by the Organization of Brazilian Cooperatives (OCB). As for the methodological procedures, the study was defined as bibliographic-descriptive and qualitative; bibliographic-descriptive, since it was based on the organization and analysis of existing materials, describing the properties of the cooperative phenomenon; and qualitative, since the aim was to interpret meanings, not seeking regularities, but the understanding of the object studied. Finally, from the interpretation of the information gathered, it was possible to perceive the importance of cooperativism in the Brazilian context, not only in terms of facing specific issues, but also in relation to its potential for expansion and as a viable alternative for the social and economic inclusion of the most vulnerable strata, capable of expanding the democratic frontiers to the organizational field.

Partiendo de una perspectiva histórica, describimos las diferentes ramas del cooperativismo y luego analizamos el contexto del movimiento cooperativo brasileño, teniendo en cuenta algunas de las principales características que permiten dibujar un perfil del movimiento, tales como: número de cooperativas, número de cooperativistas y total de empleos generados. Los datos fueron segmentados por campos de actividad, según la clasificación propuesta por la Organización de Cooperativas Brasileñas (OCB). En cuanto a los procedimientos metodológicos, el estudio se definió como bibliográfico-descriptivo y cualitativo; bibliográfico-descriptivo, ya que se basó en la organización y el análisis de los materiales existentes, describiendo las propiedades del fenómeno cooperativo; y cualitativo, ya que el objetivo fue interpretar significados, no buscando regularidades, sino la comprensión del objeto estudiado. Finalmente, a partir de la interpretación de las informaciones recogidas, fue posible percibir la importancia del cooperativismo en el contexto brasileño, no sólo en cuanto al abordaje de cuestiones específicas, sino también en relación a su potencial de expansión y como alternativa viable para la inclusión social y económica de las capas más vulnerables, capaz de ampliar las fronteras democráticas al campo organizativo.O presente artigo tem como objetivo apresentar o retrato do cooperativismo no Brasil, realizando um recorte entre os anos de 2010 e 2018. Partindo de uma perspectiva histórica, descrevemos os diferentes ramos de atuação do cooperativismo para, em seguida, analisarmos o contexto do movimento cooperativista brasileiro, levando em conta algumas das principais características que possibilitam traçar um perfil do movimento, tais como: número de cooperativas, número de cooperados e total de empregos gerados. Os dados foram segmentados por ramos de atuação, de acordo com a classificação proposta pela Organização das Cooperativas Brasileiras (OCB). Quanto aos procedimentos metodológicos, o estudo foi definido como bibliográfico-descritivo e qualitativo; bibliográfico-descritivo, uma vez que se baseou na organização e análise de materiais já existentes, descrevendo as propriedades do fenômeno cooperativista; e qualitativo, pois o intuito foi interpretar significados, não buscando regularidades, mas sim a compreensão do objeto estudado.
