The present work is the product of the master's dissertation entitled "Violence against women and the strategies for coping with it: a look from the Specialized Police Station of Timon (MA)", developed in the Graduate Program in Public Policies at the Universidade Federal de São Paulo. Federal do Piauí (UFPI) with the objective of analyzing violence against women in Brazil, discussing strategies for confronting it based on data from the Integrated System of Police Management of Maranhão (SIGMA). The research methodology consisted of a bibliographic and documentary study. The results showed that the Brazilian political, economic and social trajectory is marked by coloniality and patriarchal constructions, with deep asymmetries in gender relations. Thus, the study showed the importance of analyzing the theme in a perspective of totality and from an intersectional approach, in order to apprehend the structures and systems of oppression that give rise to violence against women, with the implementation of effective public policies having as based on the dimensions of race/ethnicity, social class, gender and sexual orientation.
