Adolescent pregnancy: topic for reflection in health policies

Resumo: Subject matter of this paper is pregnancy in adolescence. Theoccurrence of pregnancy in this phase of the human development is conditioned by political, economical, social, cultural and subjective aspects. The present analysis about this theme assumes the notion of human rights and the acknowledgment of children and adolescents as subjects of rights, enunciated by de national and international legal means. Though it represents only one dimension of the reproductive health, and, according to factual data presented along this paper, there has been a reduction in fertility and birth rates, the phenomenon of adolescent pregnancy can be considered an important indicator of the conditions for the effective exercise of sexual and reproductive rights among adolescents. Departing from this understanding, the paper tries to contribute to the debate in order to realize the sexual and reproductive health and concretize the strategies oriented to the formulation of such health policies, which promote the integral health care of adolescents.

A ocorrência da gravidez nessa fase do desenvolvimento humano é condicionada por aspectos políticos, econômicos, sociais, culturais e subjetivos. A reflexão proposta sobre o tema tem como base a noção de direitos humanos e o reconhecimento de crianças e adolescentes como sujeitos de direitos preconizado pelos instrumentos legais nacionais e internacionais. Embora represente apenas uma das dimensões da saúde reprodutiva e, conforme dados apresentados no decorrer deste trabalho, haja uma redução nas taxas de fecundidade e de natalidade, o fenômeno da gravidez na adolescência pode ser considerado um importante indicador das condições para o exercício dos direitos sexuais e reprodutivos de adolescentes.
