Resumo: | This article addresses the life of José Martí (1853-1895), Cuban national hero who was directly involved in the independence struggles fought in Cuba at the end of the nineteenth century. Through theoretical and bibliographical study, it presents the theoretical formation of Martí and his actions in the search for emancipation of Cuba from Spanish control, as well as his struggle for Latin American and Caribbean emancipation. Martí's positions were influenced by romanticism, positivism, liberalism and industrialism, approximating himself to socialist movements of the time and affirming the importance of Latin American unity for the construction of national sovereignty and social welfare. |

Por meio de estudo teórico e bibliográfico se apresenta a formação teórica de Martí e suas ações na busca da emancipação de Cuba frente ao domínio espanhol, bem como sua luta pela emancipação latino-americana e caribenha.
