The teaching of natural sciences in Brazil Empire (1835-1870): brief analysis of a context of educational in the province of Maranhão

Resumo: This article aims to discuss the first moves towards the insertion of the teaching of Natural Sciences in the state of Maranhão Imperial in the period 1835-1870. The work is characterized as a Historical-Documental Research, carried out from the analysis of official documents such as: Provincial Laws, Regulations, Reports, Curriculum and Teaching Programs. Two school institutions constituted a field of investigation, namely the Liceu Maranhense and the Casa de Educandos Artifices do Maranhão. It was evident that the Natural Sciences were initially included in the Liceu Maranhense in 1855, which is an adaptation to what was established nationally, the Coutto Ferraz Reformation. In 1866 was created the chair of Natural Sciences applied to the Arts at the Casa de Educandos Artifices. Natural Sciences were not well accepted in these two educational establishments, the main causes being the lack of educational purposes, difficulties in assimilating the contents of the area by students and the low relevance of Science in the country.

El trabajo se caracteriza por ser una Investigación Histórico-Documental, realizada a partir del análisis de documentos oficiales tales como: Leyes Provinciales, Normativas, Informes, Currículum y Programas Docentes. Dos instituciones escolares constituyeron un campo de investigación, a saber, el Liceu Maranhense y la Casa de Educando Artifices do Maranhão. Era evidente que las Ciencias Naturales se insertaron inicialmente en el Liceu Maranhense en 1855, lo que es una adaptación a lo que se estableció a nivel nacional, la Reforma de Coutto Ferraz. En 1866 se crea la cátedra de Ciencias Naturales aplicadas a las Artes en la Casa de Educandos Artifices. Las Ciencias Naturales no fueron bien aceptadas en estos dos establecimientos educativos, siendo las principales causas la falta de fines educativos, las dificultades para asimilar los contenidos del área por parte de los estudiantes y la poca relevancia de las Ciencias en el país.Este artigo tem como objetivo discutir os primeiros movimentos para inserção do ensino das Ciências Naturais no estado do Maranhão, no período Imperial brasileiro, de 1835-1870. O trabalho se caracteriza como uma pesquisa histórico-documental, realizada a partir da análise de documentos oficiais, como: leis provinciais, regulamentos, relatórios, currículos e programas de ensino. Duas instituições escolares constituíram-se campo de investigação, sendo elas: o Liceu Maranhense e a Casa de Educandos Artífices do Maranhão. Evidenciou-se que as Ciências Naturais foram, inicialmente, inseridas no Liceu Maranhense em 1855, sendo uma adequação ao que estabelecia nacionalmente a Reforma Couto Ferraz. Em 1866, criou-se a cadeira de Ciências Naturais Aplicadas às Artes, na Casa de Educandos Artífices.
