Cultivate: a project that integrates scientific research with the community

Resumo: The Training and Research Environmental Center of the University of São Paulo (Cepema-USP) is dedicated since 2006 to research and environmental education. The center is located in the city of Cubatao: state of São Paulo in the Santos Metropolitan Region, surrounded by the Atlantic Forest - one of the most important tropical forests in South America. In the seedling nursery of Cepema-USP, in 2008, Cultivate Project was created   with   the   idea   of   offering   workshops for   schools    and    shelters, promoting environmental awareness and integration between the university, the community   and business   associations.    By    analyzing data    from perception   surveys performed with project participants, it was found that those who already had some contact with science through the Cepema USP some how have differential attitudes towards their community. Participants of projects that revitalize public parks showed their changes in their perception about how they should care about the environment and their participation as active agents as transformers of society in which they live.

O centro localiza-se na cidade de Cubatão: município do estado de São Paulo, na Região Metropolitana da Baixada Santista, cercada pela Mata Atlântica - uma das mais importantes florestas tropicais do continente Sul-Americano. Foi no viveiro de mudas do Cepema-USP que, em 2008, nasceu o Projeto Cultivar que atualmente ministra oficinas com escolas da rede pública de ensino, casas de acolhimento e lar de idosos favorecendo a consciência ambiental e integração entre a Universidade, comunidade e empresas. Ao analisar os dados das pesquisas de percepção realizadas com participantes do projeto, averiguou-se que aqueles que já tiveram algum tipo de contato com a ciência através do Cepema-USP de alguma maneira possuem atitudes diferencias frente à situações em sua comunidade.
