Investigating the “Flat Earth” on YouTube: contributions to Science teaching

Resumo: | This study aims to understand how the phenomenon of flat Earthism is constituted, encompassing both flat Earthers and those who seek to unravel their ideas. The rising negationist wave increasingly requires a contextualized teaching, as teachers are confronted with anti-scientific discourse in the classroom. Assumptions of Bardin’s content analysis were adopted for examining the videos. Three categories were defined a posteriori: conceptual, historical, and nature of science aspects. The most popular videos go against flat Earth ideas. However, most of them approach this superficially and reproduce central features of flat Earthism and naive views of the nature of scientific knowledge. This research may support Science teachers’ practices about a theme that has gone beyond social media, promoting discussion about the nature of science. |

This research may support Science teachers’ practices about a theme that has gone beyond social media, promoting discussion about the nature of science.Este estudio tiene como objetivo comprender cómo se constituye el fenómeno del terraplanismo, de acuerdo con los vídeos más populares del YouTube brasileño, abarcando tanto el universo de los terraplanistas como los que pretenden aclararlo. La creciente ola de negacionismo científico exige cada vez más una enseñanza contextualizada, ya que los profesores se enfrentan a discursos anticientíficos en el aula. Para examinar los vídeos, se adoptaron las hipótesis del análisis de contenido de Bardin. Se definieron tres categorías a posteriori: aspectos conceptuales, aspectos históricos y aspectos relacionados con la naturaleza de la ciencia. Los vídeos más populares están destinados a combatir las ideas terraplanistas, sin embargo, en su mayoría, lo hacen de manera superficial, además de reverberar aspectos centrales del terraplanismo y visiones ingenuas sobre la naturaleza del conocimiento científico. Esta investigación puede subsidiar la práctica de los profesores de ciencias en un tema que se ha expandido más allá de las redes sociales, promoviendo también discusiones sobre la Naturaleza de la Ciencia.Este estudo tem como objetivo depreender como o fenômeno do terraplanismo se constitui, de acordo com os vídeos mais populares do YouTube brasileiro, contemplando tanto o Universo dos terraplanistas quanto o de quem se propõe a desnudá-lo. A onda crescente de negacionismo científico demanda cada vez mais um ensino contextualizado, à medida que professores são confrontados com discursos anticientíficos em sala de aula. Para exame dos vídeos, foram adotados pressupostos da análise de conteúdo de Bardin. Definiu-se, a posteriori, três categorias: aspectos de ordem conceitual, aspectos históricos e aspectos referentes à Natureza da Ciência. Os vídeos mais populares se propõem a combater as ideias terraplanistas, entretanto o fazem, em sua maioria, superficialmente, além de reverberar aspectos centrais do terraplanismo e visões ingênuas sobre a natureza do conhecimento científico.
