An original dramaturgy about torture, from the South: 50 years of Torquemada, by Augusto Boal

Resumo: The article presents a reflective investigation of Torquemada (1971), a play by Augusto Boal, beyond modern/colonial conventions, to broaden the studies on the “dramaturgies of the South”. The objective is to situate such dramaturgy, understood as “forgotten history” (rarely commented/studied/enacted) and “current” (referring to chronic social problems faced in contemporary Latin America, such as torture by State agents). The text is organized into three moments: Boal beyond the Theater of the Oppressed; Torquemada in its content-form, presented as a “colonial wound”; the senses and meanings of torture in a decolonial reading of the (con)text. It is concluded that the historical relevance of the playwright in the fight against the Brazilian civil-military regime and the international recognition as the creator of the Theater of the Oppressed relegated his authorial work to the background and that Torquemada is a document-witness of dark times of the storm that befell Brazil.

El objetivo es situar dicha dramaturgia, entendida como “historia olvidada” (poco comentada/estudiada/puesta en escena) y “actual” (refiriéndose a problemas sociales crónicos que enfrenta la América Latina contemporánea, como la tortura por parte de agentes del Estado). El texto se organiza en tres momentos: Boal más allá del Teatro del Oprimido; Torquemada en su contenido-forma, presentado como una “herida colonial”; los sentidos y significados de la tortura en una lectura decolonial del (con)texto. Se concluye que la relevancia histórica del dramaturgo en la lucha contra el régimen cívico-militar brasileño y el reconocimiento internacional como creador del Teatro del Oprimido relegó su obra autoral a un segundo plano y que Torquemada es un documento-testigo de oscuros tiempos de la tempestad que azotó a Brasil.O artigo apresenta uma investigação reflexiva sobre Torquemada (1971), peça de Augusto Boal, para além de convenções modernas/ coloniais, a fim de ampliar os estudos sobre as “dramaturgias do Sul”. O objetivo é situar tal dramaturgia, entendida como “história esquecida” (raramente comentada/ estudada/ encenada) e “atual” (refere-se a problemas sociais crônicos enfrentados na América Latina contemporânea, tais como a tortura por agentes de Estado). O texto se organiza em três momentos: Boal para além do Teatro do Oprimido; Torquemada em sua forma-conteúdo, apresentada como “ferida colonial”; os sentidos e significados da tortura em uma leitura decolonial do (con)texto.
