Trans performativities in the circus: confabulating about aesthetics, politics and dissident epistemologies

Resumo: When we talk about the circus, why do we so quickly remember the figure of the bearded woman, while there are so few historical references to the presence of trans and gender-dissident artists in the circus scene? Here, trans performativities act as a tension to the onto-epistemological pillars of thought and the modern world. Based on reflections on aesthetics, politics and dissident epistemologies, this article analyzes the participation of trans and gender-dissident artists in the Brazilian circus, the discursive relationship between virtuoso and colonial imaginary, and then proposes the possible epistemic contours of a trans performativity in the circus.

Aquí, las performatividades trans actúan como una tensión en los pilares ontoepistemológicos del pensamiento y del mundo moderno. A partir de reflexiones sobre estética, política y epistemologías disidentes, este artículo analiza la participación de artistas trans y disidentes de género en el circo brasileño, la relación discursiva entre imaginario virtuoso e imaginario colonial, para luego proponer los posibles contornos epistémicos de una performatividad trans en el circo.Por que, quando falamos de circo, lembramos tão rapidamente da figura da mulher barbada, ao passo em que há tão poucas referências históricas sobre a presença de artistas trans e gênero-dissidentes na cena circense?
