The impact of fashions institutions on contemporaneity: an analysis of Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode

Resumo: The aim of the research is to investigate the impact of the actions of the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode (FHCM) in the global fashion field. The institution was created in 1868 in Paris, France, was chaired by couturiers and administrators of some maisons de couture and played a significant role in fostering and protecting the clothing industry in France, especially the sur mesure one. Existing to this day, its mission is to promote the "French fashion culture" and to reinforce the role of the city of Paris as the fashion capital of the world. The Fédération's actions will be thought of from the current structure of the space of production and circulation of fashion goods and agents. Such structure will be interpreted as a global dimension field, which is, in turn, formed by several national fields. Although there is an interdependence of these fields, the French field has a greater influence on the definitions and decision making of this global field. Once the FHCM is the most relevant fashion grouping in France today, the idea is to point out how the actions of this institution are an attempt to reproduce and maintain the structure of this field. The research methodology consists in analyzing documents and archives of the FHCM; consulting the media through which it communicates; and investigating from multidisciplinary bibliographies. The analysis of this material will be conducted based on a theoretical framework of sociology.

L'institution a été créée en 1868, à Paris, en France, a été présidée par des couturiers et des administrateurs de quelques maisons de couture et a eu une fonction centrale dans la promotion et protection de l'industrie de l’habillement en France, notamment celle sur mesure. En fonctionnement jusqu'à aujourd'hui, sa mission est de promouvoir la "culture française de mode" et renforcer le rôle de la ville de Paris comme capitale mondiale de la mode. Les actions de la Fédération seront pensées à partir de la structure actuelle de l'espace de production et circulation des biens et agents de la mode. Telle structure sera interprétée comme un champ de dimension globale formé par de divers champs nationaux. Bien qu'il y ait une interdépendance entre tels champs, il semble que le champ français a une plus grande influence sur les définitions et les décisions de ce champ global. Une fois la FHCM étant le groupement de mode avec la plus grande pertinence actuellement, l'idée est de pointer la façon dont les actions de cette institution sont un essai de reproduire et maintenir la structure de ce champ. La méthodologie de recherche est composée de l'analyse des documents et archives de la FHCM; des consultations des moyens par lesquels elle fait sa communication; et l'approfondissement de bibliographies multidisciplinaires. Le traitement des données sera réalisé à partir d'un cadre théorique de la sociologie.O objetivo da pesquisa é investigar o impacto das ações da Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode (FHCM) no campo global da moda. A instituição foi criada em 1868, em Paris, na França, presidida por costureiros e administradores de algumas maisons de couture, e teve papel central no fomento e na proteção da indústria de vestuário na França, principalmente o sob medida. Existente até hoje, sua missão é promover a “cultura francesa de moda” e reforçar o papel da cidade de Paris como “capital mundial da moda”. As ações da Fédération serão pensadas a partir da estrutura atual do espaço de produção e circulação de bens e agentes da moda. Tal estrutura será interpretada como um campo de dimensão global, que é, por sua vez, formado por diversos campos nacionais. Ainda que haja uma interdependência de tais campos, parece haver uma maior influência do campo francês nas definições e tomadas de decisão desse campo global. Uma vez que a FHCM é o agrupamento de moda de maior relevância na França atualmente, a ideia é apontar como as ações da referida instituição são uma tentativa de reprodução e manutenção da estrutura desse campo. A metodologia da pesquisa consiste em análise de documentos e arquivos da FHCM; consulta aos meios pelos quais ela faz sua comunicação; e investigação a partir de bibliografias de cunho multidisciplinar.
