Disarming the Coat of Arms from Guatemala

Resumo: The following artistic proposition addresses the work "Disarming Guatemala's Coat of Arms", a theoretical and practical re-reading of Guatemala's independence. This patriotic symbol "reinforces" a national identity with which the population does not identify and now demands another symbology, artistically disarming the elements present in the current coat of arms. Removing symbols of violence, death, and conquest, I seek to open space for elements of revolution, freedom, and strength from the collective struggles of the popular indigenous movements, which have arduously gone through all kinds of military and social oppression, but always remain firm and strong in their purposes. In this work I develop a new coat of arms, made up of elements of revolutionary purpose.

Este símbolo patriótico "refuerza" una identidad nacional con la que la población no se identifica y exige ahora otra simbología, desarmando artísticamente los elementos presentes en el escudo actual. Eliminando los símbolos de la violencia, la muerte y la conquista, busco abrir espacio a los elementos de la revolución, la libertad y la fuerza de las luchas colectivas de los movimientos populares indígenas, que han pasado arduamente por todo tipo de opresión militar y social, pero que siempre se mantienen firmes y fuertes en sus propósitos. En este trabajo desarrollo un nuevo escudo, compuesto por elementos de las luchas revolucionarias.A seguinte proposição artística aborda a obra “Desarmar o Brasão de Guatemala”, uma releitura teórica e prática sobre a independência da Guatemala. Este símbolo patriótico "reforça" uma identidade nacional com a qual a população não se identifica e agora cobra outra simbologia, desarmando artisticamente os elementos presentes no brasão atual. Retirando símbolos de violência, morte e conquista, busco abrir espaço a elementos de revolução, liberdade e força das lutas coletivas dos movimentos populares indígenas, que arduamente vem atravessando todo tipo de opressão militar e social mas sempre seguem firmes e fortes nos seus propósitos.
