From beauty to horror, from dictatorship to resistance: the resignification of landscapes in Postcards from Brazil

Resumo: The present article explores Postcards from Brazil, artwork made in 2016 by Gilvan Barreto, in which some photographs of landscapes advertised during the Brazilian civil-military dictatorship are transformed into postcards that, retailed, intends to refer to murders that happened at these portrayed places. This investigation aims to apprehend how the resignification of these images looks back into the authoritarian past to reconstruct truth and memory about dictatorial violence. For this, the paper reflects on the notion of landscape, including on its historical constitution. Then, it analyzes how the artist subverts some imagined predicates of Brazilian landscape by inscribing crimes in its space, making visible and recalling the horrors of the dictatorship, in an act of resistance that makes to honor the memory of its victims, perpetuated on the landscapes as absences.

El presente trabajo busca aprehender cómo la resignificación de estas imágenes mira al pasado autoritario para reconstruir la verdad y la memoria sobre la violencia dictatorial. Con tal fin, este texto lanza reflexiones sobre la noción de paisaje, incluso con respecto a su constitución histórica. Luego, analiza cómo el artista la subvierte en sus predicados imaginados al inscribir los crímenes en el espacio, visibilizando/recordando los horrores de la dictadura en un mecanismo de resistencia dirigido a las víctimas, perpetuadas en los vacíos impuestos al paisaje.  Este artigo investiga a obra Postcards from Brazil, realizada em 2016 por Gilvan Barreto, na qual fotografias de paisagens difundidas durante a ditadura civil-militar brasileira são transformadas em cartões-postais que, retalhados, passam a referenciar assassinatos ocorridos nos locais retratados. Busca-se, aqui, apreender de que forma a ressignificação dessas imagens visa o passado autoritário sob a ótica da reconstrução da verdade e da memória sobre a violência ditatorial. O artigo reflete sobre a noção de paisagem, inclusive no que diz respeito à sua constituição histórica.
