Resumo: The purpose of this article is to analyze the ornamental power of letters outside their textual environment: when they are depicted in paintings. Having as object of study works by Grão Vasco, it analyzes how a specific type of letters, the initials, adorn the books and those who carry them, being part of the appropriately honorable scenario for such characters.

Ayant comme objet d'étude des travaux de Grão Vasco, on y analyse comment un type spécifique de lettres, les initiales, ornent les livres et ceux qui les portent, faisant partie du scénario convenablement honorable pour de tels personnages.O objetivo deste artigo é analisar a potência ornamental das letras fora de seu ambiente textual: quando figuradas em pinturas.
