“When a man knows to read, write and count, he can, on his own identity, to clarify and expand himself”: Northen Parahyba poor children schooling (1855-1866)

Resumo: | The institutionalisation of primary school in the nineteenth century was determined by the attempts to consolidate the literacy having the defense of social progress and civilization project. Legislation and other official documents were available as mediators in customs and habits establishing and aimed people intellectual and moral formation, defining rules to the reading, writing and mathematics learning. It is intended to present primary classes’ prescriptions and schooling processes subjects of northern Parahyba. In order to analyze the way poor students experienced the education in an elitist and slavery society were seen public instruction and province presidents’ reports, legislation and various documents. The conclusion is that writing and reading were abilities also assessed by poor subjects, which through the school universe searched to reach the desired behavior and different spaces accommodation. Key words: Education History, Poor Schooling, First Letters, Northern Parahyba.La institucionalización de la escuela primaria en el siglo XIX se basaba en los intentos de consolidar el letramento teniendo la defensa del proyecto de civilización y progreso social. Legislación y otros documentos oficiales funcionaban como mediadores en la edificación de costumbres y hábitos que apuntaban a la formación intelectual y moral del pueblo definiendo reglas sobre el aprendizaje de la escritura, lectura y operaciones matemáticas. Se pretende presentar prescripciones para las clases de primeras letras y acciones de sujetos involucrados en los procesos de escolarización en la Parahyba del Norte. A fin de analizar cómo los alumnos pobres vivenciaron la instrucción en una sociedad elitista y esclavócrata, se analizaron informes de la instrucción pública y de presidentes de la provincia, legislación y documentos diversos. Se concluye que aprender a leer y escribir fueron habilidades accedidas también por sujetos pobres, que vía inserción en el universo escolar, buscaban alcanzar el comportamiento deseado y el acomodamiento en diferentes espacios de la sociedad. Palabras clave: Historia de la Educación, Escolarización de pobres, Primeras Letras, Parahyba del Norte A institucionalização da escola primária no século XIX pautava-se pelas tentativas de consolidar o letramento tendo a defesa do projeto de civilização e progresso social. Legislação e outros documentos oficiais funcionavam como mediadores na edificação de costumes e hábitos que visavam a formação intelectual e moral do povo definindo regras sobre o aprendizado da escrita, leitura e operações matemáticas. Pretende-se apresentar prescrições para as aulas de primeiras letras e ações de sujeitos envolvidos nos processos de escolarização na Parahyba do Norte. A fim de analisar como alunos pobres vivenciaram a instrução numa sociedade elitista e escravocrata, analisaram-se relatórios da instrução pública e de presidentes da província, legislação e documentos diversos. Conclui-se que aprender a ler e escrever foram habilidades acessadas também por sujeitos pobres, que via inserção no universo escolar buscavam atingir o comportamento desejado e a acomodação em diferentes espaços da sociedade.
