Internationalization at Unioeste: An analysis of the university’s English proficiency

Resumo: The present research has as its theme the analysis of the proficiency level in English of the academic community from Western Paraná State University (Unioeste), by studying the score results from TOEFL ITP exams, which have been applied between 2013 and 2018, when the program Languages Without Borders (LwB) promoted this kind of activity. It is aimed to analyse how university professors, students and employees understand the language considered as a current lingua franca, which also plays an important role in internationalization. This process has been strengthened by government initiatives, such as the implementation of language teaching programs throughout the country, focusing at enabling higher education institutions to deal with international situations. Unioeste, facing this reality, has sought to intensify its internationalization process and requires, among the most varied actions, to verify the languages proficiency. In order to do so, the score results at TOEFL ITP were quantified and interpreted, provided by the LwB to the Language Center general coordination, in reports indicating the performance of the institution. Thus, the research is characterized as quantitative and qualitative. The study, finally, has contributions from authors such as Crystal (2003), Jenkins (2014), British Council (2018), Abreu-e-Lima et al (2016), among others. From the results, it was possible to identify a long path towards proficiency in English at the university, which shows, mostly, B1 and A2 scores.

From the results, it was possible to identify a long path towards proficiency in English at the university, which shows, mostly, B1 and A2 scores.A presente pesquisa tem como tema a análise do nível de proficiência em Língua Inglesa da comunidade acadêmica da Universidade Estadual do Oeste do Paraná (Unioeste), a partir dos resultados nos exames TOEFL ITP, aplicados entre 2013 e 2018, período em que o Programa Idiomas sem Fronteiras (IsF) realizou esse tipo de atividade. Objetiva-se examinar de que modo docentes, discentes e funcionários da universidade compreendem a considerada língua franca da atualidade, que, também, assume papel fundamental na internacionalização do ensino superior. Esse processo tem sido fortalecido por iniciativas governamentais, como, por exemplo, a implementação de programas de ensino de línguas em todo país, visando a capacitar as instituições de ensino superior para situações internacionais. A Unioeste, frente a essa realidade, tem buscado intensificar seu processo de internacionalização e necessita, entre as mais variadas ações, que se verifique a proficiência em línguas. Para tanto, foram quantificados e interpretados os resultados no teste já mencionado, fornecido pelo IsF à sua coordenação geral do Núcleo de Línguas (NucLi), da Unioeste, na forma de relatórios que indicam o desempenho da instituição. Desse modo, a pesquisa caracteriza-se como quantitativa e qualitativa. O estudo, por fim, tem como aporte teórico as contribuições feitas por autores como Crystal (2003), Jenkins (2014), British Council (2018), Abreu-e-Lima et al. (2016), entre outros.
