Metaphors of the professional practice of physiotherapists : An analysis of anamnesis as a locus of clinical dialogue and metaphorical clues for physiodiagnosis

The objective of this study was to analyze, based on the prior knowledge of physiotherapists about the concept of metaphors, if, and in what way, the records of metaphors in the narratives of patients occur when carrying out the interview of the anamnesis and the relationship of potentially metaphorical expressions with the technical terms of the health sciences, as clues for the physiotherapeutic diagnosis. The data collection instruments used were a semi-structured questionnaire applied to nine physiotherapists and document analysis of 19 anamnesis of physiotherapy records from two institutions located in the state of Minas Gerais. The data reveal that physiotherapists have knowledge about metaphors; understand the use of metaphors as a communication resource to help patients express the signs and symptoms of diseases and consider that there is a relationship between colloquial language and the technical terms of the health sciences. We consider that the metaphorical expressions used in the patients' narratives present an approximation with the Ontological metaphors of the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) by Lakoff and Johnson (2002), as it is a way of representing the bodily experiences with objects and substances and can contribute to the interpretation of clues for the diagnosis, clinical or physiotherapeutic. However, these should be used sparingly to avoid stigmatizing certain diseases (SONTAG, 1984; 1989).
