“Coming out of the ghetto”: homosexuality, censorship and resistance in lampião (1978-1981)

Homosexuality, censorship, repression and resistance is what we sought to investigate from the newspaper Lampião da Esquina, published in Rio de Janeiro, which circulated between 1978 and 1981. As sources, we had thirty-seven editions and three extra editions of Lampião, some editions from Jornal do Brasil and O Globo, the thematic report of the National Truth Commission (2014) and interviews by Trevisan (2016), Green (2016) and Fernandes (2017) to the Memorial da Resistance of São Paulo. We dialogued with Foucault (1999), Green (2000), Trevisan (2018), Fico (2007) and Luca (2005). We aim to analyze how it was created and circulated, what the demands were, how censorship and repression operated under the tabloid, and what resistance was present in the newspaper. We conclude that the newspaper was born from the meeting of intellectuals, attracted the eyes of the Moralizing State and suffered censorship and persecution attempts, but developed resistance, whether in daily, isolated or organized actions.
