Resumo: Since its genesis, design has coexisted with a desire of its academics to see it closer to scientific knowledge. Taking a trip through the 20th century, starting from the modern vanguards, which inaugurated the discipline, this article sought to make an overview of how the relationship with science was approached by certain design groups. At the end, an exposition of this debate in contemporary times was made, using the dialog established between Robert Farrell, Cliff Hooker, Per Galle, and Peter Kroes. The arguments used by the authors were analyzed through the discussion of the thing in itself, a concept present in Immanuel Kant's philosophy that was later criticized by Friedrich Hegel. Through the Hegelian development of the question, this article was able to establish a position that design does not have enough characteristics to be considered science.
