Resumo: This work aims to study the evolution of forest covering of Londrina county (north of Paraná 23° 23' S, 51°11' W) between 1970 and 1980. All forest fragments were mapped by photointerpretation in an area of 609,50km2, having Londrina as the center. Forest area reduction was measured in each fragment. Deforestation was not linealy correlated with distance from the city, but an area of oustanding reduction in forest coverage was noticed at 4-6 Km the urban center. The fragments smaller than 20 ha were the ones that lost the largest forested area in absolute terms. The concentration of a smaller forested area in reduced number of large fragments seems to repeat in other portions of the country.

The concentration of a smaller forested area in reduced number of large fragments seems to repeat in other portions of the country.   As florestas cumprem um papel importante na manutenção dos processos ecológicos fundamentais do planeta, e a determinação de números precisos sobre o desmatamento é fundamental na elaboração de projetos conservacionistas. Este trabalho teve como objetivo estudar a evolução da cobertura florestal no gradiente urbano de Londrina, norte do Paraná (23°23' S, 51°11°) entre os anos de 1970 e 1980, preocupando-se em determinar a classe de tamanho de fragmento mais afetada pelo desmatamento, a influência da urbanização sobre este processo, além de produzir material que auxilie trabalhos de fiscalização e monitoramento. Foram mapeados através de fotointerpretação, todos os remanescentes florestais de uma área de 609,50 km. tendo Londrina como centro. Mediu-se as reduções e incrementos de área florestada ocorrida em cada fragmento. A influência da urbanização sobre o padrão de distribuição da cobertura florestal entre 1970 e 1980 não se comprovou.
