“We draw the attention of our readers to the various general publications”:: representations about slaves in Piauí newspapers, 1850-1887

 Based on the reference of sources on slavery in Brazil and Piauí, we analyze how slaves were represented in Piauí periodicals of the 19th century. With regard to the survey of documentation relevant to the subject, we turned to the newspapers O Governista, O Echo Liberal, O Propagador, O Expectador, A Imprensa, O Piauhy, O Amigo do Povo, A Pátria and A Época. During the text we dialogue with Freyre (2010), Schwarcz (2017), Chalhoub (2011) and Gomes (1996). With regard to the methodology of the investigative process, we adopted descriptive historical research based on consultation and analysis of the documentary base. We hope that this work will help historiography in the study of slavery and contribute to the interest of new researchers.
