Brazilian Navy in the early twentieth century: technology and policy

Resumo: | This paper analyzes the literature that addresses the Brazilian Navy in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth. Such literature has two dimensions, the royalist and the republican, both advocating the restructuring measures of the Navy. Moreover, the paper also analyzes the measures, actually taken or not, by successive republican governments, until the year 1910, with the objective of promoting the necessary Navy’s suitability to new times, new technologies and new social arrangements. The end of slavery, the Brazilian Navy Revolt (Armada Revolt), the arms races, the international one and the one that ended up been settled among Chile, Argentine and Brazil, in South America, allow us to understand so the proposals aired as the limits of the reforms undertaken. |

Tal literatura possui duas vertentes a monarquista e a republicana, ambas advogando medidas de reestruturação da Marinha. Por outro lado, o trabalho analisa ainda as medidas efetivamente tomadas ou não pelos sucessivos governos republicanos, até o ano de 1910, com o objetivo de promover as reformas necessárias à adequação da Marinha aos novos tempos, novas tecnologias e novas sociabilidades.
