Regional political elite and formation of a national party: internal organization, electoral performance and extinction of the Liberal Republican Party (State of Paraná, 1913-1915)

 This article includes an analysis of the participation of members of the Paraná political elite in the creation of a national party, the Liberal Republican Party (PRL). The aim of this study is to produce knowledge about the factors that caused the implantation and dissolution of the aforementioned association in the State of Paraná, between the years 1913 and 1915. In this context, a main argument of this analysis states that the leading elite of the PRL in Paraná was composed, for the most part, by graduates of the governing party that existed in that state. The municipal leaders of this association also spent time in the situationist flock. Thus, the founding of that party's directories in Paraná was a strategy for former government officials to remain politically active. Another finding in this article points out that the electoral performance of PRL candidates for state deputy was more expressive than the performance of individual candidates. Therefore, belonging to a party ensured a greater degree of electoral competitiveness. Finally, it is demonstrated that, after the extinction of the PRL, most of its leaders in Paraná returned to the state governing party.
