Resumo: | This article examines the characteristics of the nineteenth-century editorial project of Revista del Pacífico (Valparaíso, 1858-1861), to expose and explain the scope of its programmatic proposal around the construction of a transnational and American republic of letters. At the same time, the analysis aims to understand the tensions between the realization of this editorial objective and the need for the magazine to function as a platform of opposition to the government of Manuel Montt. In this way, it will become evident that only after overcoming the dominance of conservative ideas represented by the president and his followers, the possibility of materializing this new republic in the press stands will be opened in the country. |

A la vez, el análisis pretende descubrir las tensiones existentes entre el logro de este objetivo editorial y la necesidad de la revista de accionar como plataforma opositora frente al gobierno de Manuel Montt. De este modo, quedará en evidencia que solo tras superar el dominio de las ideas conservadoras representadas por el presidente y sus seguidores, se abrirá en el país la posibilidad de materializar esta nueva república desde las tribunas de la prensa.Este artigo examina as características do projeto editorial oitocentista da Revista del Pacífico (Valparaíso, 1858-1861), para expor e explicar o alcance de sua proposta programática em torno da construção de uma república das letras transnacional e americana. Ao mesmo tempo, a análise visa conhecer as tensões entre a concretização deste objetivo editorial e a necessidade de a revista funcionar como plataforma de oposição ao governo de Manuel Montt.
