Ramon Llull and the Global Middle Ages: geopolitics, integration, and diversity

Resumo:  Recently, the concept of the Global Middle Ages has attracted many scholars. It is not a world history covering all continents, but focuses on Afro-Eurasia, in their connected and integrated portions. This article aims to explore three aspects of that Afro-Eurasian world (geopolitics, integration, and diversity) with emphasis on the 13th and 14th centuries. To do so, we will examine the experience of globality of the Majorcan philosopher Ramon Llull (c. 1232-1316), gathering traces of it in his trajectory and textual production. Methodologically, we will work with comparisons, contextualization, and analyses of the (dis)connections and (dis)integrations between different societies, considering scales that transcend national frontiers and framework.

No se trata de una historia mundial, de todos los continentes, sino solamente de Afro-Eurasia, sus partes conectadas e integradas. El objetivo de este artículo es explorar tres aspectos de ese mundo afro-euroasiático (geopolítica, integración y diversidad), con énfasis en los siglos XIII-XIV. Para ello, examinaremos la experiencia de globalidad del filósofo mallorquín Ramon Llull (c. 1232-1316), recogiendo indicios en su trayectoria y producción textual. Metodológicamente, trabajaremos con comparaciones, contextualizaciones y el análisis de las (des)integraciones y (des)conexiones entre distintas sociedades, considerando escalas que trascienden las fronteras nacionales.Nos últimos anos, a Idade Média Global tem sido um conceito que conquista cada vez mais adeptos no meio acadêmico. Não se trata de uma história mundial, de todos os continentes, mas da Afro-eurásia, suas porções conectadas e integradas. O objetivo deste artigo é explorar três aspectos daquele mundo afro-euroasiático (geopolítica, integração e diversidade), com destaque para os séculos XIII-XIV. Para tanto, examinaremos a experiência de globalidade do filósofo maiorquino Ramon Llull (c. 1232-1316), recolhendo indícios em sua trajetória e produção textual.
