"Every artist has to go where the people are." The political movement of Diretas Já in Brazil - 1983-1984

Resumo: | Initially, this article comments on the relationship between history and the present tense political history, in order to enter the political movement of Diretas Já, elapsed in Brazil between 1983 and 1984. The support for the amendment Dante de Oliveira which proposed direct presidential election the successor general João Batista Figueiredo became a major political events of the Brazilian republican history. Assuming it was an event of the end of the situation of the military dictatorship, the struggle for democracy and citizenship in the country. The political articulations, the importance of the massive return of the population as a political actor, the demonstrations in several cities and the role of the media were included elements. Finally, the intention is to resume questions about memory and history of such an event from the print media coverage in 1994, ten years after the events that led millions to the streets. |

O apoio à emenda Dante de Oliveira que propunha eleição direta para presidente ao sucessor do general João Batista Figueiredo tornou-se uma das principais manifestações políticas da história republicana brasileira. Partindo do pressuposto de ter sido um evento da conjuntura do final da ditadura militar, da luta por democracia e cidadania no país. As articulações políticas, a importância do retorno maciço da população como ator político, as manifestações em várias cidades e o papel da mídia foram elementos contemplados.
