Resumo: This article aims to analyze a case of corruption in the Navy during the 1870s, where mineral coal, the main fuel for steamships, was diverted with significant impacts on the budget of the Brazilian naval force. The work used as main source the report produced by the fraud investigation commission in the supply of coal to the Navy, formed between 1877 and 1879. In methodological terms, we propose the analysis of the fraud itself, the administrative structure involved, forms of investigation by the commission , results, impacts and consequences. We conclude by considering the role of corruption in the transformation process of the steam era and as an element of imperialism and dependence born with the introduction of steam navigation.

O trabalho utilizou como fonte principal o relatório produzido pela comissão de investigação de fraudes no provimento de carvão para a Marinha, formada entre 1877 e 1879. Em termos metodológicos, propomos a análise da fraude em si, estrutura administrativa implicada, formas de investigação da comissão, resultados, impactos e consequências.
