Resumo: In this article, I discuss how some republican values and symbols were exploited by national sailors in the 1910s, especially during the November uprising, known as the "whip revolt" and by actors who participated in it. In this sense, the voyage of one of the Brazilian ships in October of the same year to Lisbon, witnessing the Proclamation of the Republic in the European country, may have contributed to the affirmation of the idea of Republic among Brazilian sailors, as well as other foreign references and experiences. . This appropriation of the republican idea in this popular milieu and mostly composed of blacks, pardos and mestizos is reinforced by the unfolding of the notion of citizenship at the time, just over two decades after the abolition of slavery in Brazil.

Nesse sentido, a viagem de um dos navios brasileiros em outubro do mesmo ano a Lisboa, testemunhando a Proclamação da República no país europeu, pode ter contribuído para a afirmação da ideia de República no meio dos marujos brasileiros, bem como outras referências e experiências estrangeiras.
