Resumo: Objective: to assess the hydrogenic potential and salivary volume before and after using menthol chewing gum in healthy volunteers. Method: this is a quantitative, quasi-experimental, pre-test and post-test study, carried out with 45 healthy volunteers between 18 and 60 years old. The saliva sample was collected in a non-stimulated manner, following the spitting method. Volunteers were asked to accumulate saliva in their mouths and spit it out into a millimeter flask, every minute, before and after receiving the menthol chewing gum, for ten minutes at each step. Results: in the first stage of collection, the mean hydrogenic potential was 7.06, increasing to 7.42 (p<0.001) after the second stage. Salivary volume increased from 5.95 mL to 23.13 mL (p<0.001). Conclusion: chewing gum after eight hours of fasting caused an increase in the hydrogenic potential and salivary volume. This increase in salivary volume has no clinical relevance for bronchoaspiration.

Método: estudio cuantitativo, cuasiexperimental del tipo preprueba y postprueba, realizado con 45 voluntarios sanos entre 18 y 60 años. La muestra de saliva se recogió sin estimular, siguiendo el método de escupir. El voluntario debe acumular saliva en la boca y escupirla en un frasco milimétrico, cada minuto, antes y después de recibir el chicle mentolado, durante diez minutos en cada paso. Resultados: en la primera etapa de recolección, el potencial hidrogenético promedio fue de 7,06, aumentando a 7,42 (p<0,001) después de la segunda etapa. El volumen salival aumentó de 5,95 mL a 23,13 mL (p<0,001). Conclusión: el uso de chicle después de ocho horas de ayuno provocó un aumento del potencial hidrogenético y del volumen salival. Este aumento del volumen salival no tiene relevancia clínica para la broncoaspiración.Objetivo: Avaliar o potencial hidrogeniônico e o volume salivar antes e depois do uso da goma de mascar mentolada em voluntários saudáveis. Método: Estudo quantitativo, quase-experimental do tipo pré-teste e pós-teste, realizado com 45 voluntários saudáveis entre 18 e 60 anos. A amostra da saliva foi coletada de forma não estimulada, seguindo o método de spitting. O voluntário deveria acumular saliva na boca e cuspir num frasco milimetrado, a cada minuto, antes e depois de receber a goma de mascar mentolada, por dez minutos em cada etapa. Resultados: Na primeira etapa da coleta, a média do potencial hidrogeniônico foi de 7,06, aumentando para 7,42 (p<0,001) após a segunda etapa. O volume salivar subiu de 5,95ml para 23,13ml (p<0,001). Conclusão: O uso da estratégia após oito horas de jejum provocou elevação do potencial hidrogeniônico e do volume salivar.
