Resumo: This article aims is to compare the short-story “The fall of the house of Usher”, by Edgar Allan Poe, and its cinematographic adaptation, “La chute de la maison de Usher”, by Jean Epstein. First of all, Poe and Epstein will be approximated, as both had an undeniable self-awareness in relation to the artistic realization. Secondly, a comparison between the film and the short-story will be made, considering Epstein’s autonomy in relation to the original version and the cinematographical resources the film-maker uses to recreate the supernatural atmosphere of Poe’s short-story.

Em primeiro lugar, será feita uma aproximação entre Poe e Epstein, uma vez que ambos apresentavam uma inegável autoconsciência em relação à realização artística.
