Brazilian dream: the strategic insertion of Brazil in Latin America as a factor for attracting mass immigration flows in the first two decades of the twenty-first century

Resumo: The purpose of this research is focused on the issue of contemporary immigration to Brazil in the beginning of 21st century allied to the issue of the country’s strategic insertion in Latin America. This factor induces great waves of economic migrants with causes and reasons for emigrating that seem to converge, according to our assumption, with the proper insertion and attractiveness of Brazil, creating what we will call Brazilian dream in the new immigrants. Brazil appears nowadays as the largest centre of attraction of migrants in the Southern Hemisphere, according to studies held by agencies of United Nations (IOM and UNHCR). Therefore, we will show the role of the strategic insertion of Brazil in Latin America to this mass migration, with a considerable increase of these flows in the last two decades, and present a thematic cartography of routes and origins of Latin American migrants towards Brazil.

Este factor ha inducido grandes flujos de inmigrantes económicos con causas y motivaciones para emigrar que convergen, según nuestra hipótesis, con la propia inserción y atracción de Brasil, creándose o que llamaremos de Brazilian dream en los nuevos inmigrantes. Brasil se presenta hoy como el mayor polo de atracción de migrantes del hemisferio sur, según estudios de agencias de las Naciones Unidas (OIM y ACNUR). Por lo tanto, el artículo indagará cual es papel de la inserción estratégica de Brasil en la América Latina para esta migración masiva, con un crecimiento considerable de estos flujos en las dos últimas décadas, además de presentar una cartografía temática de las rutas y orígenes de los migrantes latinoamericanos hacia Brasil.A proposta desta pesquisa está centrada no tema das migrações contemporâneas para o Brasil no início do século XXI, aliadas à questão da inserção estratégica do país na América Latina. Esse fator induziu grandes fluxos de imigrantes econômicos com causas e motivações para emigrar que, de acordo com nossa hipótese, convergem com a própria inserção e atração do Brasil, criando ou o que chamaremos de sonho brasileiro em novos imigrantes. Segundo estudos de agências das Nações Unidas (OIM e ACNUR), o Brasil é hoje apresentado como o maior pólo de atração de migrantes no hemisfério sul.
