The Association of Traditional Medics of Mozambique (AMETRAMO) was created in September 1992, on account of the Civil War in Mozambique (1977/1992), after the separation of its metropolis, Portugal, in 1975. The Association constitutes a body regulated by the Government and gathers the healers who perform attendances through consultations with an oracle or receptions of ancestors’ spirits. In order to be able to work, the healers need a register that proves their membership to AMETRAMO. From birth to the after-death, the healers interfere in the community life. After a period of intense persecution on their manifestations, considered by FRELIMO (political party of Marxist base which was the winner of the Civil War) as a result of ignorance and obscurantism, the process of recognition and institutionalization of such practices occurs. The purpose of this article is to continue the discussion between the tradition-modernity binomial, having the AMETRAMO as its object.
