Social movements, policing and surveillance: a theoretical dialogue to be developed

Resumo: This study seeks to explain in which way relations between the field of studies on collective action and the field of studies on surveillance can be found, specifically in what refers to the issue of policing social movements. Based on an analysis centrally focused on the review of the literature of the two main international journals in each area (Mobilization and Surveillance & Society) and with the help of NVivo 11, the objective is to investigate to what extent these different fields (do not) produce a theoretical dialogue between them. After making explicit specific gaps in each field, the study concludes that is necessary to construct a wider theoretical dialogue based on concepts that can interconnect these fields, such as “control”, “power” and “asymmetry”.

A partir de un análisis centrado centralmente en la revisión bibliográfica de las dos principales revistas internacionales de cada área (Mobilization y Surveillance & Society) y con la ayuda del software NVivo 11, el objetivo es investigar en qué medida estos diferentes campos (no) producir un diálogo teórico entre sí. Luego de explicar las brechas específicas en cada campo, se concluye que existe la necesidad de construir un diálogo teórico más amplio basado en conceptos que puedan interconectar estos campos, como “control”, “poder” y “asimetría”.O presente estudo busca explicitar de que modo constituem-se as relações entre o campo de estudos em ação coletiva e o campo de estudos em vigilância, especificamente no que se refere à temática do policiamento a movimentos sociais. A partir de uma análise centralmente focada na revisão de literatura das duas principais revistas de âmbito internacional em cada área (Mobilization e Surveillance & Society) e com auxílio do software NVivo 11, objetiva-se investigar em que medida esses diferentes campos (não) produzem um diálogo teórico entre si.
