Resumo: The present work aimed to make a theoretical review on the theme of family farming. For this, we sought the different analyzes made by various authors, in the period from 1960 to the present day, according to the context in which the topic was being discussed. We start from the controversial debate of the feudalism x capitalism theses, passing through the issue of family production in the 70s and 80s, where some structural aspects were privileged, such as the development of capitalism in the countryside, the process of capital accumulation and the reflexes of capitalist transformations for the family production. Then the debate about the "functionality" of small production that generated many controversies, and, finally, a synthesis of the analyzes made from the 90s on family farming, focusing on its role and spaces in the capitalist system.

Para isso, buscamos as diferentes análises feitas por vários autores, no período que vai de 1960 até os dias atuais, de acordo com o contexto em que o tema estava sendo discutido. Partimos do debate polêmico das teses feudalismo x capitalismo, passando pela questão da produção familiar na década de 70 e 80 onde foram privilegiados alguns aspectos estruturais como o desenvolvimento do capitalismo no campo, o processo de acumulação de capital e os reflexos das transformações capitalistas para a produção familiar.
