Migration in the Northern Semiarid region: recent dynamics, return and social policies

Resumo: The aim of the paper is to develop a descriptive analysis of migration in the northern semi-arid. From a demographic approach, we analyzed some characteristics of interstate migration from the municipalities that are within the northern semiarid and those contained in the Federal Units that have their municipalities in this region. The paper also analyzed the profile of these migrants considering the receipt of social programs. The census data of 2010 revealed that the impact of migration are stronger on the semi-arid region and that, although they are still areas of negative balances, return migration and its indirect effects are a key to understand the intra-regional dynamics. Social programs apparently have greater impact on return migrants and is more important in the semiarid region.

A partir de uma abordagem sociodemográfica, analisaram-se algumas características da migração interestadual separando os municípios que compõem o semiárido setentrional e fora dele segundo as Unidades da Federação. O trabalho analisou ainda o perfil desses migrantes considerando o recebimento de programas sociais. Os dados censitários do ano de 2010 permitiram identificar que o impacto da migração é mais forte sobre a região do semiárido e que, embora ainda sejam áreas de saldos negativos, o retorno migratório e seus efeitos indiretos se constituem como peça fundamental para entender as dinâmicas intrarregionais.
