Resumo: | The objective of the article presented here is to carry out an investigation, based on the theoretical framework developed by Carlos Hasenbalg, of the strategies for maintaining racial and social inequalities in Carioca soccer in its early years. For this, we will consider as empirical landmarks the cases of the Bangu Athletic Club and the Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama, clubs of popular character, and the reactions of the consolidated rivals of the city, linked to the socioeconomic elites, to prevent the sports ascension of these clubs. Color and social position appear as criteria of distinction and obstacles to material and symbolic benefits. The tension between amateurism and professionalism, with the rise of Vasco da Gama, would provoke irreversible consequences to the soccer of the city. |

Con este fin, consideraremos como puntos de referencia empíricos los casos del Bangu Athletic Club y el Vasco da Gama Club of Regattas, clubes populares y las reacciones de los rivales consolidados de la ciudad, vinculados a las élites socioeconómicas, para evitar el ascenso deportivo de estos clubes. El color y la posición social aparecen como criterios de distinción y obstáculos a los beneficios materiales y simbólicos. La tensión entre el amateurismo y la profesionalidad, con el surgimiento de Vasco da Gama, tendría consecuencias irreversibles para el fútbol de la ciudad.O objetivo do artigo ora apresentado é o de realizar uma investigação, a partir do arcabouço teórico elaborado por Carlos Hasenbalg, das estratégias de manutenção das desigualdades raciais e sociais no futebol carioca em seus primeiros anos. Para isto, consideraremos como marcos empíricos os casos do Bangu Athletic Club e do Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama, clubes de caráter popular, e as reações dos rivais consolidados da cidade, vinculados às elites socioeconômicas, para impedir a ascensão esportiva destes clubes. A cor e a posição social aparecem como critérios de distinção e obstáculos aos benefícios materiais e simbólicos.
