Resumo: This article analyzes the languages through which a racialist State is established and legitimized in Brazil. In order to do so, it addresses the emergence of the tradition of the late nineteenth century oligarchic liberalism, demonstrating how its ideas contributed to the depoliticization of the racial question, as well as to counteract popular sovereignty in the context of Abolition and the fall of the Crown. Then, the text analyses how the Brazilian thought of the twentieth century, in the diversity and strength of its thinkers, would not stabilize a politicizing and central critique of the racialist State. It concludes by offering a republican and democratic approach that articulates the racial issue as organic to the formation of democracy in Brazil.

Para ello, aborda el surgimiento de la tradición liberal oligárquica a fines del siglo XIX, demostrando cómo sus ideas contribuyeron a la despolitización de la cuestión racial, así como a la interdicción del principio de soberanía popular en la contexto de la Abolición y el fin del Imperio. Luego, el texto se centra en analizar cómo el pensamiento brasileño del siglo XX, en la diversidad y fuerza de sus principales intérpretes, no fue capaz de estabilizar una crítica politizadora y central del Estado racialista. En ese sentido, se pretende sugerir un enfoque republicano y democrático que articule la cuestión racial como orgánica a la formación de la democracia en Brasil.O presente artigo analisa as linguagens com que se estabelece e se legitima um Estado racialista no Brasil. Para tanto, aborda a emergência da tradição liberal oligárquica de fins de século XIX, demonstrando como suas ideias contribuíram para a despolitização da questão racial, assim como para a interdição do princípio da soberania popular no contexto da Abolição e do fim do Império. Em seguida, o texto se concentra em analisar como o pensamento brasileiro do século XX, na diversidade e força de seus principais intérpretes, não foi capaz de estabilizar uma crítica politizante e central do Estado racialista.
