Resumo: | This research analyzes mandatory voting in Brazil inlight of the transformations in contemporary society. Therefore, it discusses the evolution of the concept of freedom, from antiquity tomodernity. Next, the 22 countries that have the most consolidated democracies are analyzed – countries that have been continuously since the mid-20th century. XX to the present time. Finally, there is a critical analysis of mandatory voting in Brazil. The deductive method and bibliographical and documentary research are used. It is concluded that the need for Brazil to adopt the optional vote, via amendment to the Constitution, much more suited to the concept of freedom in current times, as well as to democracy in contemporaneity. |

Para tanto, discorre-se sobre a evolução do conceito de liberdade, da antiguidade à modernidade. Na sequência, analisam-se os 22 países que possuem as democracias mais consolidadas – países ininterruptamente desde a metade do séc. XX até os tempos atuais. Por fim, faz-se uma análise crítica do voto obrigatório no Brasil. Utiliza-se o método dedutivo e pesquisa bibliográfica e documental.
