The preservation of the face in spoken text: mitigation procedures as socio-interactional strategies

Resumo: The aim of this work is to highlight the attenuation observed in President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s discourse. By drawing attention to the marks left in the enunciation, we hope to expose the procedures he employs in order to create a positive public image (facework). Above all, we intend to discuss the illocutory value of certain utterances in order to verify how the selection and combination of various elements can achieve the speaker's needs and purposes in a given communicative situation. It is important to stress that the use of such sociointeractional strategies contributes to the construction of text meaning and makes the author's intentions explicit. The corpus is composed of excerpts from an interview aired by Globo, a television broadcasting channel, and the theoretical framework is based on concepts of Conversation Analysis.

Pretende-se, sobretudo, discutir o valor ilocutório dos enunciados, assinalando o modo pelo qual a seleção e a combinação de certos elementos atendem às necessidades e propósitos do locutor em dada situação comunicativa. Vale ressaltar que o emprego dessas estratégias sócio-interacionais contribui para a construção do sentido do texto e para tornar explícitas as intenções do autor.
