The production of urban space in Três Lagoas – MS based on the demographic dynamics

Resumo: The objective of this paper is to understand the relationship between the demographic dynamics of Três Lagoas–MS, Brazil, and the production of urban space, which from 2006was marked by the introduction and consolidation of the city as the ‘World Pulp Capital’. The city grew from 68,162 inhabitants in 1991 to 123.281 in 2020,according to IBGE estimate (2020), an increase of 55.119 people over a period of 29 years, i.e., its population almost doubled. The methodological procedures were based on theoretical assumptions about the production of urban space, social and spatial segmentation, and data from IBGE and the municipal government. It is a theoretical paper, and the procedure adopted is the literature and document reviews. The results indicate that the economic and population growth of the city promoted an intense social and spatial dynamics that caused a growing segmentation of the urban space, characterized by areas of social and spatial segregation, increased periphery and hierarchization of the space through private property appreciation.

La ciudad creció de 68.162 habitantes en 1991 a 123.281 in 2020, según estimaciones del IBGE (2020), un aumento de 55.119 personas en un período de 29 años, lo que significa que su población casi se ha duplicado. Los procedimientos metodológicos se basaron en supuestos teóricos sobre la producción de espacios urbanos, la segmentación socioespacial y datos del IBGE y del gobierno municipal. Se caracteriza como una obra de carácter teórico, y el procedimiento adoptado es la revisión bibliográfica y documental. Los resultados indican que el crecimiento económico y poblacional de la ciudad promovió una intensa dinámica socioespacial, provocando una creciente segmentación del espacio urbano, caracterizada por áreas de segregación socioespacial, aumento de periferias y jerarquización del espacio a través de la valorización de la propiedad privada.O presente trabalho tem por objetivo compreender a relação entre a dinâmica demográfica de Três Lagoas–MS, Brasil, e a produção do espaço urbano, que a partir de 2006 foi marcado pela introdução e consolidação da cidade como Capital Nacional da Celulose. A população da cidade saltou de 68.162 habitantes em 1991 para 123.281 em 2020, segundo estimativa do IBGE (2020), um acréscimo de 55.119 pessoas em um período de 29 anos, ou seja, a população quase dobrou. Os procedimentos metodológicos pautaram-se nos pressupostos teóricos sobre a produção do espaço urbano, a segmentação socioespacial e nos dados do IBGE e da prefeitura municipal.
