Can information sustainability be seen as a new paradigm of Information Science?

Objective: The present study proposes a reflection on the construction and/or constitution of new paradigms for post-modern civilization. In particular, the possibility of the constitution of the sustainability paradigm as a new dominant paradigm in different areas of knowledge. The objective of this essay is to present a critical analysis on visualizing Informational Sustainability as a new paradigm for Information Science. Methodology: As to the objectives, it is characterized as a bibliographic and exploratory study. Results: The discussion on Informational Sustainability emerged in 2018, in the Research Group on Sustainability Management in Information Science, in the Graduate Program in Information Science at the Federal University of Santa Catarina. However, it is a nascent field in scientific research on sustainability in Information Science, seeking to address and discuss challenges for information scientists. That is, seeking to understand the functioning of complex systems in the area, whether related to the access and use of information, the organization of knowledge, or the development of sustainable information technologies. Conclusions: there is a plethora of research, educational studies, professional training, specializations, and practical actions that can be developed focused on the cause of Sustainability. And consequently, to achieve the dimensions of Sustainable Development, in which Information Science has the potential to include the cause in its research, by means of Information Sustainability. But, does it become a new paradigm? Or does it just interrelate to already existing scientific challenges in the field? Perhaps it can be a question of semantics, but it is unquestionable that researchers in Information Science urgently reflect on the consolidation of the theme in their scientific and social work, focusing their scientific objectives on the global goals of sustainable development, in which the proposal of Sustainable Information can be the path to a sustainable Information Science.
