Altmetrics: questions to the current paradigm for scientific production evaluation

Resumo: Introduction: Altmetrics is a subarea of Information Science, in which alternative metrics are used to complement the evaluation of scientific production. It is currently based almost exclusively on indicators created from the number of citations received by an article. Objective: To examine the changes that altmetrics can bring to the current paradigm of the metric studies. Methodology: Bibliographical review focused on the concepts of scientific paradigm proposed by Thomas Kuhn. Results: Citation analysis is considered as the predominant procedure for the current evaluation of scientific production. Therefore, it is interpreted as part of the current paradigm. The main criticism to this methodology are summarised. The paper discusses whether the emergence of altmetrics can be a response to these anomalies and could represent the emergence of a new paradigm. Conclusions: Altmetrics is going through a pre-paradigmatic period and, therefore, it is still not possible to state whether the alternative metrics will be incorporated into the current paradigm or a new paradigm will be formed.

Objetivo: Reflexionar acerca de los cambios que la altmetría puede traer al paradigma vigente de los estudios métricos. Metodología: Revisión bibliográfica fundamentada principalmente en los conceptos de paradigma científico propuestos por el filósofo de la ciencia Thomas Kuhn. Resultados: El análisis de citas es considerado como un procedimiento predominante para la actual evaluación de la producción científica y, por lo tanto, interpretada como parte del paradigma vigente. Se presentan las principales críticas a esa metodología y se discute si la emergencia de la altmetría como respuesta a esas anomalías podría representar el surgimiento de un nuevo paradigma. Conclusiones: La altmetría está pasando por un período pre-paradigmático y, por eso, aún no es posible afirmar si las métricas alternativas serán incorporadas al paradigma actual o se formarán un nuevo paradigma.Introdução: A altmetria é um subcampo da Ciência da Informação, em que se utilizam métricas alternativas como medida complementar para avaliação da produção científica, que atualmente se baseia quase que exclusivamente em indicadores construídos a partir do número de citações que um artigo recebe. Objetivo: Refletir acerca das mudanças que a altmetria pode trazer ao paradigma vigente dos estudos métricos. Metodologia: Revisão bibliográfica fundamentada principalmente nos conceitos de paradigma científico propostos pelo filósofo da ciência Thomas Kuhn. Resultados: A análise de citações é considerada como procedimento predominante para a atual avaliação da produção científica e, portanto, interpretada como parte do paradigma vigente. São apresentadas as principais críticas a essa metodologia e discute-se se a emergência da altmetria como resposta a essas anomalias poderia representar o surgimento de um novo paradigma.
