IFRN scientific publications indexed on the Web of Science and the open access

Resumo: Objective: The present paper investigates the access conditions of the scientific publication of the Federal Institute of Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN), precisely the articles published in open access scientific journals, indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) until December 2021, for this, the predominant research areas were identified, the scientific journals were characterized in terms of access and nationality, and the incidence or not of charging fees for article processing was verified. Methodology: As for the methodological procedures used, it is classified in terms of objectives as descriptive nature, with a quantitative and qualitative approach and application of a case study. Results: From the collected data, it was possible to verify the increase of the scientific publications of the IFRN indexed in the base, being more representative in the Multidisciplinary, Life Sciences, and Technology areas. Regarding open access, a significant number of articles are available in gold format (56.6%), with the occurrence of charging of article processing fee. Regarding the nationality of the journals, there is a predominance of Brazil, but were also identified a significant number of publications available in scientific journals from the United Kingdom, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and the United States. Conclusions: It is concluded that the indexed publications are aligned with the areas of knowledge of the courses offered by the IFRN. In addition, it was possible to perceive that most publications are available in open access journals, however, it is noted that it is necessary to consider the particularities of the business models and therefore it is suggested the establishment of strategies that can favor and expand the open access to scientific publications produced within the scope of the Institution.

Metodología: Con relación a los procedimientos metodológicos utilizados, se clasifica en cuanto a objetivos como de carácter descriptivo, con enfoque cuantitativo y cualitativo y aplicación de estudio de caso. Resultados: A partir de los datos recolectados, fue posible verificar el aumento de las publicaciones científicas del IFRN indexadas en la base, siendo más representativas en las áreas Multidisciplinar, Ciencias de la Vida y Tecnología. En cuanto al acceso abierto, hay una cantidad importante de artículos disponibles en formato oro (56,6 %), cobrando tasa de procesamiento de artículos. Acerca de la nacionalidad de las revistas, hay predominio de Brasil, pero también se identificó un número significativo de publicaciones disponibles en revistas del Reino Unido, Suiza, Países Bajos y Estados Unidos. Conclusiones: Se concluye que las publicaciones indexadas están alineadas con las principales áreas de conocimiento de los cursos que ofrece el IFRN. Además, fue posible percibir que la mayoría de las publicaciones están disponibles en revistas de acceso abierto, sin embargo, se advierte que es necesario considerar las particularidades de los modelos de negocio y por ello se sugiere el establecimiento de estrategias que puedan favorecer y ampliar el acceso abierto a las publicaciones científicas producidas en el ámbito de la Institución.Objetivo: O presente trabalho investiga as condições de acesso da publicação científica do Instituto Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN), precisamente os artigos publicados em periódicos científicos de acesso aberto, indexados na Web of Science (WoS) até dezembro de 2021, para isso identificou-se as áreas de pesquisas predominante, caracterizou-se os periódicos científicos quanto às formas de acesso e nacionalidade e verificou-se a incidência ou não de cobrança de taxas de processamento de artigos. Metodologia: Quanto aos procedimentos metodológicos utilizados, classifica-se quanto aos objetivos como de natureza descritiva, com abordagem quanti-qualitativa e aplicação de um estudo de caso. Resultados: A partir dos dados coletados, foi possível verificar o aumento das publicações científicas do IFRN indexadas na base, sendo mais representativa nas áreas Multidisciplinar, Ciências da Vida e Tecnologia. Em relação ao acesso aberto, se observa uma quantidade significativa de artigos disponíveis no formato gold (56,6%), com ocorrência de cobrança de taxa de processamento de artigos. No que se refere a nacionalidade dos periódicos, se tem a predominância do Brasil, mas também foi identificado um quantitativo significativo de publicações disponíveis em periódicos científicos do Reino Unido, Suíça, Holanda e Estados Unidos.  Conclusões: Conclui-se que as publicações indexadas se alinham às grandes áreas de conhecimento dos cursos oferecidos pelo IFRN.
