Resumo: This thesis aimed to analyze the contributions of basic psychological needs (BPN) mediated by the coach-athlete relationship (CAR) on the athletic satisfaction among Brazilian coaches and young athletes. For this, the first study carried out a systematic review of the literature on the PubMed, Sport Discus, Web of Science, Scopus, Lilacs and Scielo bases to identify the variables associated with CAR, in which 31 studies met the inclusion criteria. Positive (feelings, social aspects, leadership and motivation) and negative (stress, coping, negative dyadic and burnout) associations were found with CAR. The shortage of studies was identified in South America, Africa and Oceania while the predominance of researches is English language. Thus, it is necessary the continuity of CAR evaluation in different cultures. The second paper aimed to examine the cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of the Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire (CART-Q) for coaches among 130 male and female coaches from Paraná state, of collective and individual sports. Brazilian version of the CART-Q for coaches presented satisfactory psychometric properties, maintaining the 11 items distributed into three dimensions (proximity, commitment and complementarity), with a valid and reliable structure. Further, the existence of a second-order factor (CAR) was confirmed, similar to the original version. Third study included the examination of the CAR mediator impact on the association between BPN satisfaction and athletic satisfaction among Brazilian coaches and young athletes. The participants were 364 male and female coaches (n=182) and athletes (n=182) who participated of the 2015 Youth School Games (national phase). The results showed significant relationships between BPN and CAR for coaches and athletes (47% and 49% of shared variance, respectively). CAR mediated significantly the association between BPN and athletic satisfaction, since the mediation model explained 54% of coaches' satisfaction and 81% of athletes' satisfaction variability. CAR mediation exerted an increase in the direct effect from 0.56 to 0.71 among coaches; however the mediating effect was more evident among athletes (0.17 to 0.71). It is concluded that, in the Brazilian sporting context, athletes and coaches who are satisfied with their BPN and who establish close relationships based on trust and respect are more likely to feel satisfied in their sport. Such characteristics have become more evident in the young athletes perspective who perceive the relationship with the coach as determinant for their satisfaction.

Such characteristics have become more evident in the young athletes perspective who perceive the relationship with the coach as determinant for their satisfaction.
