Resumo: Spinal cord injury is a disabling neurological syndrome, as it causes neurological damage and neuro vegetative disorders with changes in motor, sensory and autonomic functions, triggering the person's disability condition. From the injury, a process of transformation and daily learning begins in the life of the person and his/her family, with important consequences, such as dependence, which subjects family participation, especially during rehabilitation, determining the active presence of the people who surround the person with spinal cord injury in supporting the process of rehabilitation and adaptation. This research had the objective of apprehending experiences of the daily life of the person with spinal cord injury that uses the wheelchair. Descriptive, exploratory study, with qualitative approach, oriented by the Symbolic Interactionism. In order to identify the subjects, the Basic Health Units of the municipality and the Metropolitan Paradesportive Union of Maringá were contacted. The participants were 23 people with spinal cord injuries, 11 from the Basic Units and 12 from the paradesportive entity. The data collection took place in the period from January to June 2015, through a semi-structured interview. The dialogues were recorded, fully transcribed and later analyzed following the precepts of the Thematic Content Analysis of Bardin. From the theoretical basis and data analysis, three articles were elaborated, the first one: "Changes in the daily life of people with spinal cord injury"; the second, "Person with spinal cord injury: confrontations and support groups"; and the third, "Exclusion experienced by people with spinal cord injury". The study verified that the person with spinal cord injury experiences several daily transformations, such as moving around with a wheelchair, taking care of hygiene, and changes in sexuality, which provoke innumerable feelings and trigger a daily learning process. It leads, over time, to adaptation and overcoming. Along this path, those people encounter important support groups such as family, friends, community, spirituality, rehabilitation sites, health professionals, and sports practice. However, they face experiences of social exclusion and the lack of constant accessibility. In this context, and highlighting the importance of investing in the preparation of future nurses, the unique value of the individualized nursing approach is distinguished, which seeks a holistic view of the person who receives the care. The intrahospital and post-injury guidelines, and even the nurse's role in public health, should focus on rehabilitation activities that highlight the significant role of the family in coping with the situation; that is, it is essential to implement joint actions - person with spinal cord injury, family, multiprofessional team - throughout the care process and, also, it is essential that the person with injury participates in his/her community and in the sports practice to acquire a better adaptation and socialization.
